Prof. Dr. Iyad Hassan is a Consultant in General and Endocrine Surgery Head of General, Endocrine and Cancer Surgery at the Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi.
In 1998, Prof. Dr. Iyad Hassan completed his MBBS at the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. He qualified for the German Board of Surgery in 2005 as well as for the German Board of Visceral Surgery- a specialized branch of general surgery which focuses on benign and malignant disorders of internal organs- in 2007. Prof. Dr. Iyad Hassan worked for 10 years as a consultant for Endocrine and Surgical Oncology in the University Hospital of Marburg. In 2009, he moved to the UAE and held the position as Chairman of General, Vascular, and Thoracic Surgery in a large governmental hospital in Abu Dhabi for 5 years. In 2012, he became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and subsequently in 2013, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Glasgow (FRCS).
To date, he has performed more than 15.000 major surgeries out of which 3000 were complex cancer procedures. His aesthetic surgery experience is based on the minimally invasive technique where he received two awards from the German Society of Surgeons: the Johannes-von-Mikulicz-Radecki-Georg-Kelling award for Laparo-Endoscopic Surgery in 2005 and the Felicien-Steichen award for Endoscopic Surgery in 2006. Prof. Iyad Hassan is a well-known expert in minimally invasive endocrine surgery, laparoscopic colorectal surgery and pancreatic surgery. He specializes in surgery to treat tumours of the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas and adrenal glands, as well as endocrine and gastrointestinal disorders. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in complex minimally invasive procedures including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, pancreatectomy, colorectal resections Achalasia and anti-reflux surgery. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Iyad Hassan has also developed several new techniques for advanced minimally invasive surgery. He is, therefore, the first to introduce complex transvaginal surgery for large adrenal and appendicular tumours to minimize abdominal scarring.
In the last 10 years of his work in UAE, he has performed the highest number of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic surgery as a single surgeon in Abu Dhabi. As per DOH-Statistics he and his team are performing annually one third of thyroid surgeries and more than half of adrenal and parathyroid surgeries in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. His scientific publications deal with clinical studies, the molecular basis of thyroid cancer, autoimmune thyroid diseases as well as laparoscopic surgery training.
Prof. Iyad Hassan is the first surgeon outside Europe to achieve a license in the prestigious “Eurocrine Program” an endocrine surgical quality registry that aims to raise clinical standards and diminish complications. He has been awarded from the Advisory Board of TOPDOC GLOBAL
as a member of the expert’s community who provide excellent care and advice in the field of Endocrine & Cancer Surgery for patients from UAE & Worldwide.
Prof. Iyad Hassan has been honored as pioneer of Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery as well as minimally invasive Surgery by medical technology and global healthcare solutions companies including, Metdronic, Baxter and Maxer endoscopy. He developed new algorithms to optimize the application of intraoperative neuromonitoring for vocal cord nerves as well as intraoperative localization of parathyroid glands using Indocyanine green during thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. Furthermore, he developed a new laparoscopic fixation method for inguinal hernia repair using natural human glue (Fibrin). As pioneer in surgical training he regularly host workshops for laparoscopic and endocrine surgery training for national and international surgeons to enhance patient safety on this field.
In 2017, he was offered a chairman position in a hospital-group in Germany, where he trained the surgeons in laparoscopic and endocrine surgery for 6 months.
Prof. Dr. Iyad Hassan is an active member of numerous professional societies and committees, including Abu Dhabi Health Research and Technology Committee, the American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of England, European society of endocrine surgeons, European Society of Endoscopic Surgery, German Society of Surgery, German Society of Endocrine Surgery, German Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery, European Foundation for Digestive Surgery, and Society of Computer and Telemetric Assisted Surgery. He is also Editor and reviewer for a large number of prestigious scientific journals including, Journal of Cancer Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, Endocrine Oncology Journal and many others.
