Fibromyalgia

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic complex disorder that causes widespread pain and tenderness to touch.

Technically, most important symptom is a chronic pain in the muscles, joints, skin and tissue that may come and go across time. There are many symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia like extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, sensitivity to touch, light, and sound, and cognitive difficulties. Stressful conditions increase the symptoms of Fibromyalgi

Diagnosis

It is very difficult to diagnose Fibromyalgia – usually it is more misdiagnosed.
In the past, doctors would check 18 specific points on a person’s body to see how many of them were painful when pressed firmly. Newer guidelines don’t require a tender point exam. Instead, a fibromyalgia diagnosis can be made if a person has had widespread pain for more than three months — with no underlying medical condition that could cause the pain. From there, you’ll talk about a plan to manage it. With the right treatment, most people who have it live a normal, active life.
If your doctor can’t find another reason for your symptoms, she’ll use a two-part process to help figure out if you have fibromyalgia. One part involves the trademark widespread pain on both sides of your body and above and below your waist. The other part measures how bad your symptoms are.

Symptoms

Usually, the symptoms begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress though a single triggering event cannot be pinpointed.

Acute pain. The pain associated with fibromyalgia often is described as a constant dull ache that has lasted for at least three months. To be considered widespread, the pain must occur on both sides of your body and above and below your waist.

Fatigue. People with fibromyalgia often awaken tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many patients with fibromyalgia have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.

Cognitive difficulties. A symptom commonly referred to as “fibro fog” impairs the ability to focus, pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks.

Causes

Doctors don't know what causes fibromyalgia, but they believe it most likely involves a variety of factors working together. These may include:

Genetics – Because fibromyalgia tends to run in families, there may be certain genetic mutations that may make you more susceptible to developing the disorder.

Infections – Some illnesses appear to trigger or aggravate fibromyalgia.

Physical or emotional trauma – Fibromyalgia can sometimes be triggered by a physical trauma, such as a car accident. Psychological stress may also trigger the condition.
