What is Corneal Transplant?
According to the study, there are more than 44,000 corneal transplants done every year and it is currently rated the second most common transplant after blood donation. Dubai is emerging as one of the top countries to get a corneal transplant in the world and they record one of the highest success rates of the surgical procedure, even coming up with better ways to carry out the transplant.
What is Cornea?
The cornea is the outermost layer of the eye it is responsible for focusing most of the light that enters the eye, the cornea serves as a protective covering for the eyes as it shields the eyes from germs, dust, and harmful wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
The cornea can recover from minor injuries on its own. However, deep abrasions may cause scars to form on the cornea, which may take longer to heal and can cause pain, tearing blurred vision, and extreme sensitivity to light.
Deeper injuries can lead to scarring of the cornea causing the cornea to lose its transparency, leading to visual impairment. In this case, a corneal transplant might be required.
What Is a Corneal Transplant?
Also called “corneal grafting” is a surgical procedure that replaces diseased or scarred corneal tissue with a similarly sized and shaped part of a healthy donor cornea.
Corneal Transplant Process can be:
- Penetrating or full-thickness transplants
- Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty transplants
- Deep Endothelial Lamellar Keratoplasty transplants
1. Penetrating or Full-thickness Transplants
Penetrating or full-thickness transplants involve the removal of the entire diseased or injured cornea from the recipient and replacing it with a healthy donor cornea.
2. Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty Transplants
Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty transplants involve the replacement of only a section of the diseased or injured cornea instead of the entire cornea.
3. Deep Endothelial Lamellar Keratoplasty Transplants
Deep Endothelial Lamellar Keratoplasty transplant is a special type of corneal transplant and it occurs when the recipient’s outer cornea is healthy but the most posterior layer is injured or diseased.
In this procedure, only the recipient’s posterior portion of the cornea is removed and replaced with the back of the healthy donor cornea. The remaining part of the recipient’s cornea remains intact. Surgeons often use this type of corneal transplant as a treatment for Keratoconus.
Local or general anaesthesia is always given before these procedures and the transplant surgery can last for 1 to 2 hours.
Why Do A Corneal Transplant?
Corneal transplants are performed for several reasons, some of which are:
- To improve the optical qualities of the cornea.
- To improve vision by replacing an injured or scarred cornea with a healthy one.
- To treat a disease that cannot be managed medically or to alleviate pain
