Canadian Celebrities Who Used Surrogacy

Surrogacy is one of the most popular types of assisted reproductive technologies in the world today. As popular as it is, known Canadian celebrities who used surrogacy are few. The form of surrogacy allowed in Canada is the altruistic form where the surrogate cannot financially profit from the surrogacy. Traditional surrogacy is the type where the surrogate uses her own eggs and the sperm from the intended father to get pregnant. Gestational surrogacy is the form where the embryo is created from the sperm and egg of the intended parents or donors. It is then transferred to the uterus of the surrogate who carries the baby to term and delivers. The most important factor in surrogacy is that one or both of the intended parents must have a genetic link with the baby. That is, one or both of the gametes must come from the intended parents.

Why do celebrities use surrogates?

The decision to welcome a baby can differ from family to family. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz generated by the news that many celebrities have used surrogacy as a means to enlarge their family. A general misconception by the public as to why celebrities use surrogates is because they want to preserve their weight and shape. However, a lot of factors can contribute to this decision. Some of these factors are:

  • Incapability of carrying a pregnancy to term because of medical issues
  • Infertility problems
  • Diseases and illnesses like cancer
  • Drug use and alcohol abuse
  • Being in a same-sex relationship or being a single parent
  • Not wanting to carry pregnancies at all.
